J.FitzPatrick shoes have a broad set of fit options, from true to size, on the slim side to more wide. It will be important to make sure you read about the specific last that you are looking to purchase.
One thing to note across the board is that our loafers have been cut on the snug side, compared to the rest of the models. We did this so that you do not need to 'size down' when going for a loafer, rather recommending you stick to your oxford size (**read exception below)
Here are a few general rules
- Our insteps would be considered generous
- All shoes with 6 eyelets will be even more generous in the instep
- Any model in full suede will feel more generous to its leather counterpart
- The boots have a forgiving instep in order for you to put them on easily
- Any monkstrap made on the MGF or LPB will feel more generous to its oxford counterpart
- If you wear your oxfords very snug, then size up for your loafers. However, for most we recommend taking the same size as your oxfords

Size, Last, And Sole Guide Most would say that J.FitzPatrick Shoes run 'true to size.' Of course this depends on the last. For the most part we have a more generous instep than not (handgrade line), if you could create one rule across all of our shoes in that line. Forefoot width (narrow vs wide) will vary across the lasts (also handgrade line). All of our shoes are made on the UK sizing system but translated to US sizes on the website. Our sizes are based on the UK standard, where ‘E’ is the “medium” width being equivalent to a US ‘D’ width. If you have always been size US10D, then this is what you should expect to be in 90% of our footwear as well. The exceptions will be the chisel lasts in the Handgrade line. Inside the shoes, you will see the UK size, but on the box, you will see UK, US and EU sizing listed. Please note that our shoes are sized based on the idea of one size difference between UK and US sizing. For example, if you are UK9, you will need our US10. Four of the eight lasts for our J.FitzPatrick Handgrade Line were created with the same heel to ball of foot ratio, only changing the shape of the toe (i.e. forefoot), thus ensuring a standard arch fit across all models. These are the TMG, JKF, MGF and LPB. This does not mean they all fit the same though. For the NGT, SEA and SES lasts, we tightened the waist for a more snug mid-foot fit. On the NJF last, we gave a more generous mid-foot as it was intended for fuller style boots. Please read our Last Guide for further descriptions on each last. While fit will be similar one must take into account that loafers will fit differently to oxfords and oxfords will fit differently to derbys and all of them differnt to monkstraps and boots. So, while you may feel good in the fit of an oxford, the same size in a derby might feel loose due to the extra room in the instep created from the open lacing. And while you fit good in a US10 in a monkstrap, on a boot you might need a US10.5 to not feel constricted. This has nothing to do with size however, but more so the nature of the different models in footwear, their patterns and where certain seams fall. Understanding this will help you choose your size more accurately.Note that our loafers are purposely cut small to account for the style's lack of laces or buckles which could be used to re-tighten shoes upon wearing. We cut our loafers to fit initially tight and typically recommend that you take the same size as your oxfords. However, if you like to wear your oxfords very snug, then we recommend size up on your loafers. If you have any uncertainties about your loafer sizing or sizing in general, please email us and we will do our best to help you find your correct size. Email nyc@jfitzpatrickfootwear.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ J.FitzPatrick Line Handgrade Our insteps would be considered generous. All shoes with 6 eyelets will be even more generous in the instep.Any model in full suede will feel more generous to its leather counterpart. The boots have a forgiving instep in order for you to get into them easily.Any double monkstrap will feel more generous to it's oxford counterpart. If you wear your oxfords very snug with little to no room to spare, then size up for your loafers. However, for most we recommend taking the same size as your oxfords, especially if you have rooom to spare in your current oxford/monkstrap/derby shoes JF Line Benchgrade The JF Line models fall between narrow and true-to-size - a fit between our TMG and NGT lasts (exception being the Baker Last. Please read further to learn more about that last)The instep is not as high with respect to our J.FitzPatrick LineThe lasts have a touch of elongation and have a very subtle silhouette ensuring a hugged fitThe chisel last (Saint Helens) fits similar to the round last (Rainier), although the Rainier last is a touch more narrow in the toe box. The Baker last is shorter yet generous last, full in the forefoot and generous through the mid-foot. We recommend keeping your standard size, noting that this is not a hugging type of dress shoe last. It is made for a more generous boot-style fit.If you have always been the same size in all of your shoes, chances are you will be that in these too.If you wear your oxfords very snug, then size up for your loafers. However, for most we recommend taking the same size as your oxfords. Sneakers Fit like your common sneaker i.e. more hugging and true in length and width. Not elongated. Toes should reach the end.If you intend to wear with dress socks stick with your dress shoe size if you like a snug fit. Being leather lined and with a leather insole they will break in and create more volume over time. If you fall into a half size in your dress shoes, size up for the sneakers. If you intend to wear thick athletic socks, size up.Insole removable for those with orthotic inserts and/or for replacing with heavier insole or thinner one to adjust fit. Last Guide J.FitzPatrick Line TMG The TMG last is the most classic fitting last. It is a very standard fit and is the last that we used to create all others. It is neither narrow nor generous but what most would consider 'true to size'. JKF The JKF last is broad in the forefoot but narrows quite a bit in the toe. This is only a problem if your foot is quite broad but for most, does not cause an issue. There take your standard size in this last. LPB The LPB soft chisel last is an identical fit to the MGF. It is generous in both length and width and good for broader feet and high insteps. If you feel loose in any of our other lasts (besides MGF), size down for this last. NGT The NGT last is a long and narrow (ish) last. While on the narrow side it is not fit for someone who takes a B/C width. It has a shallow vamp and is very hugging in the midfoot. SEA The SEA last is also a long and narrow (ish) last, our most narrow in fact and is also very hugging in the midfoot. It is similar in fit to the NGT. But not so narrow that a standard foot would need to size up. MGF The MGF sharp chisel last is an identical fit to the LPB. It is generous in both length and width and good for broader feet and high insteps. If you feel loose in any of our other lasts (besides LPB), size down for this last. NJF The NJF last is our robust toe boot last. Identical to the SES last in terms of toe shape it is a standard fitting last, what most would consider 'true to size' SES The SES last is our robust toe last. It is standard in fit in terms of width and length but with a slightly lower instep with regards to the rest of our lasts. JF Line RAINIER Our Smart Round last of the JF Line, fits very true to size. The last is a touch elongated but classic in nature. The instep is a medium fit. We recommend keeping your standard size with this last. Its fit is between our TMG and NGT lasts of the J.FitzPatrick Line in terms of length/width, with a lower instep to those two. SAINT HELENS Our Chisel last of the JF Line, also fits very true to size. The last is only subtley elongated, unlike that of our J.FitzPatrick Line which has a bit more length. The instep is also a medium fit. We recommend keeping your standard size with this last. Its fit is identical to the Rainier last, only having the toe box shape changed. BAKER Our very 'Full' round last of the JF Line, also fits true to size. You will find that this last hugs through the heel to arch but opens up at the forefoot, providing the space for your toes. Do not mistake that for a wide fit however. We recommend sticking to your standard size for this last.
